dedicated to making a positive difference in the business and lives of our members

The members of the nine state/regional chapters make up the membership of the National Watermelon Association. The Association is dedicated to making a positive difference in the business and lives of its Watermelon family – those involved in the growing, grading, handling, transporting, distributing, and selling of watermelon.

In addition to the state/regional benefits of chapter membership, the National Watermelon Association is working for its members –

  • Informing you of the most recent research regarding the prevention of diseases that affect your crop production and yields …www.Watermelon.Ag and our quarterly Vineline magazine are just two of the ways that we keep you on top of the information that matters to you most. Our presence on social sites like Twitter and FaceBook also keep you directly connected with your Watermelon family.

  • Conducting research with Universities and the USDA’s Agricultural Research Service to seek solutions to those diseases…Each year the Association invests tens of thousands of dollars on production research with research farms and labs to seek solutions to grower problems. Whether they be disease pressures, cosmetic issues (i.e. hollow heart) or potential uses of culls (i.e. ethanol), we are making a difference to help growers produce a crop and make a profit.

  • Involving you in the processes of federal legislation and government relations that can impact your company’s success…Less than 2% of all Americans work in agriculture and 96% of those in our government are far removed from farming and your way of life. We are your advocate whose goal is to ensure that the regulations, policies, and laws passed will not impede your ability to grow your business and to succeed.

  • Promoting the business by utilizing the efforts of our Watermelon Queen and Coordinator in your state/region and around the world to help promote the consumption and sales of watermelon …Our National Watermelon Queen is well trained to be a spokesperson and ambassador that promotes the health benefits and consumption of watermelon, and participates in many promotions throughout the USA. In recent years she has also promoted the watermelon industry in Canada, Mexico and Japan.

  • Gathering together annually at convention to celebrate each year’s triumphs and plan the next year’s strategies as an Association…Crisscrossing the country, hundreds of our Association members, joined by many others, gather each year to participate in our annual watermelon convention where they learn about new trends, locate new suppliers, determine policy and programs for the coming year, raise funds to finance the Association’s programs and priorities for the coming year, share fellowship, and have a lot of fun!

  • Leading by example with you (our stakeholders) in the greater produce and food marketplace…On the forefront of food safety and state-of-the-art traceability for the benefit of our members, the National Watermelon Association authored its own food safety program called the “Commodity Specific Food Safety Guidelines for the Fresh Watermelon Supply Chain.” It includes a state-of-the-art traceability program that exceeds PTI requirements, and tracks each individual watermelon from farm to consumer.

  • Engaging you as we build an Association branding program with a recognizable logo, our interaction in multiple social media avenues, and a brand new web domain…Membership is voluntary and open to anyone who has an interest in the Watermelon business. Our priorities and responsibilities include effective communications with our members through our online presence and our quarterly Vineline magazine; the search for solutions to grower disease & farming issues; legislative matters in Washington that effect our industry; promotions through our National Watermelon Queen program; and providing “VALUE” in all that we do for our members.
